In 2020, a group of students and lecturers from RMIT’s Communication Design Program gathered to test the boundaries in the field of Augmented Reality. As industry partner, they chose Appearition, an innovative augmented reality (AR) solution-driven organisation. The collaborative outcome of this practice-led studio is a new Appearition AR app (“AR u ready”) launched through both Google Play and the Apple Appstore, and the omonymous publication AR u ready? AR u ready? is a collection of augmented reality experiences from the RMIT Bachelor of Design (Communication Design) students’ studio experience, 2020. Together with the studio leads Karen ann Donnachie and Andy Simionato and students, Appearition developed a bespoke Augmented Reality app to enable students to create new worlds to be explored through AR technologies. Shortly after the studio began, it was disrupted by COVID-19 quarantine measures, and for the remainder of the course, students and teachers continued working together across virtual spaces. Appearition developed the custom-built mobile application and the Studio Leads and students created speculative worlds through AR. The final publication AR u ready? comprises the ‘target’ images that trigger the viewer’s Augmented Reality experience. AR u ready? Showcases the students’ original research and invites the reader to explore their imagined worlds. These works range from the comforting and hopeful, to the dystopic, and together contribute a contemporary survey of virtual, social, psychological and whimsical world-building.
